The limestone walls above Khor Sham rise more than 400 metres from water that rarely moves, and the whole peninsula is still creeping northward as the Arabian plate slides beneath Iran. Musandam is drowning, slowly. Its river valleys flooded long ago, leaving inlets that geographers call rias and everyone else calls fjords. A khasab full day dhow cruise crosses the largest of them. Khasab sat outside Oman's road network until 1980. Supplies came by sea, from Ras al Khaimah and from the Iranian coast fifty-five kilometres north, and the wooden dhow was the instrument of that trade. Boats were built at Sur and along the Batinah from teak imported through the Indian Ocean routes, stitched or nailed depending on the yard, and rigged with a single lateen sail. Smuggling of goats and cigarettes across the Strait of Hormuz persisted into this century in fibreglass speedboats; the dhows kept to fishing and, later, to visitors. In 1864 the British laid a submarine cable from Gwadar to Basra and built a repeater station on this bare rock in Khor Sham. Staff endured summer temperatures beyond 45°C with no shade and no company. The station closed after four years. The phrase 'going round the bend' is often traced to the sail back out of the inlet, though the etymology is disputed and probably later. The fjords matter today for what lives in them. Indo-Pacific bottlenose and humpback dolphins feed in the channels year-round. Fringing coral reefs cling to the shallows at Seebi Island and Sham, unusually resilient for a gulf where summer water reaches 33°C. Above them, Shihuh villages such as Qanaha and Maqlab hold terraced fields and stone houses reachable only by boat, their inhabitants speaking Kumzari, an Iranian language found nowhere else, spoken by perhaps 4,000 people. UNESCO has listed no site here, and the governorate has no resident tourism infrastructure beyond Khasab town itself. That absence is the point. The harbour at Khasab Harbor, Khasab, Musandam Governorate, Oman remains a working port, free to enter at 0 OMR, where fishermen unload beside moored tourist boats. Musandam fjord tours have not yet replaced the fishery. A khasab full day dhow cruise remains, structurally, a fishing boat with passengers aboard.
